Companion Program for Persons with Disabilities
2005-2006
Date to remember: March 18, 2005
Registration forms are now available for the 2005-2006 Companion Program for Persons with Disabilities, offered through the Ministère des Affaires municipales, du Sport et du Loisir (MAMSL). To obtain the form, recreation organizations from the greater Montreal area are asked to contact AlterGo. Organizations have until March 18, 2005, to submit their applications for subsidization to AlterGo, for purposes of the program.
Please note that the program’s aim is to provide financial assistance to recreation organizations that integrate disabled persons into their leisure activity schedule, where companion services are required in order for the person to fully participate. There are no restrictions regarding age or type of disability. Besides city recreation centres located in the various boroughs, other organizations eligible for subsidization include non-profit associations recognized for offering leisure services.
How to proceed
Persons living with a disability, or their family or guardian, that wish to apply for companion service subsidization must:
- Identify the specific recreation organization where they want to participate in leisure activity.
- Find out whether the organization will submit an application for subsidization in the context of the Companion Program in Leisure Activity for Persons with Disabilities.
- If the organization offered companion services last year, then they already have the necessary forms. All that is required is for them to fill in the form, providing all relevant information concerning the need for companion services.
- If the organization did not offer companion services previously: Send them AlterGo’s contact co-ordinates so they can obtain the necessary forms, and follow up with them to help them properly fill in the application.
Under normal circumstances, the recreation organization will send the application for financial assistance to AlterGo, and then inform the person as to whether the application was accepted or not; a decision that is usually rendered toward the first week in May.
The Companion Program for Persons with Disabilities is jointly administered in Montreal by the Unité régionale de loisir et de sport de Montréal (URLS) and AlterGo. For more information on the program, please contact AlterGo at (514) 933-2739, ext. 223.
