Who is the program for?

Even if the requests come from recreational organizations and municipalities, this program is dedicates to people with disabilities as here under defined.

“A person limited in the performance of normal activities who is suffering significantly and permanently, form a physical or mental deficiency, or who regularly uses a prosthesis or an orthopedic device or any other means of palliating his/her handicap” Act to secure the handicapped in the exercise of their ringhts (R.S.Q., c.E-20.1).

Who can apply?

To be eligible for this program, the organization must be :

  • A municipality, a band council or a northern village.
  • A private, legally constituted non-profit organization with a recognized mission to provide recreational services.
  • A legally constituted non- profit vacation camp with an operating license issued by Tourism Quebec.

What recreational activities are accepted?

Recreational activities refer to:

Relaxation, creative, personal development, traning or proficiency training activities undertaken during a person’s free time

Excluding:

Work-related, educational, religious, family, babysitting, adaptation or rehabilitation activities.

Therefore recreational activities include:

Cultural, scientific, technological, socio-educational, community, tourist, outdoor, physical and sporting activities.

Objectives

The program’s objectives are to facilitate access to recreational and sporting activities for people with disabilities who need the services of a companion to take part in these activities.

Therefore, the 1st Component of the Companion Program will provide financial assistance to recreational organizations and municipalities who want to hire companions to help people with a disability to take part in recreational and sporting activities.

This program is managed by the Ministère de l'Éducation, du Sport et du Loisir, in partnership, in Montreal Island, with the Unité régionale de loisir et de sport and Altergo.

How to apply?

If you are the parent of a child with a disability, you are a person with a disability, or someone within the field, and you are wondering how to proceed, here are the components.

Organisms Component

You may apply for the 1st of this program by :

  • Identifying the organization and the activities the person wishes to attend
  • Contacting this organization

If the organization does not know about the “companion program”

First you provide the address and telephone number of AlterGo, in order for them to get the application form. Then you ca proceed with the next steps.

If the organization knows about the “companion program”

You will have to complete the application form together with the organization, specifying limitations and specific needs of the person with a disability.

The organization will forward the application for financial assistance to AlterGo (Regional Association of Recreation for Disabled Persons).

Important

The organization must fill out the application form regarding the Companion Program for Leisure Activity and send it by mail no later than March 21, 2008.

Other Aspects

The eligible recreational activities must take place in the province of Quebec between June 1st of this year and March 31st of next year.

Applications for financial assistance will be assessed by the Regional Committee according to established criteria and the budget available.

Registration procedure

1. Determine which organization you would like to sign up with for leisure activities.

2. Contact the organization for specific information regarding the various activities offered and their schedules.

3. Choose the activity in which you or the person you are inquiring on behalf of would like to participate...

If the organization provided a companion service last year: If the organization has not previously offered a companion service:
You merely need to contact the organization and provide them with the necessary information regarding your (or the applicant’s) disability and specific needs so that the organization can properly fill out the application form.

The organization will then send the application for financial assistance directly to AlterGo, and subsequently inform you as to whether or not it has been accepted.

You must provide the organization with the correct contact information for AlterGo (name, address, phone number, etc.) so that the organization can then obtain the application form for the service requested.

You must then contact the organization and provide them with the necessary information regarding your (or the applicant’s) disability and specific needs so that the organization can properly fill out the application form.

The organization will then send the application for financial assistance directly to AlterGo, and subsequently inform you as to whether or not it has been accepted.

 

Deadline

The organization must fill out the application form regarding the Companion Program for Leisure Activity and send it by mail no later than March 21, 2008, to the following address:
